My Response to a Request for Support

I am just learning my way around linked in, and i am enjoying the groups far more than I would have thought.  Making real connections with real people and I look forward to contributing in far greater ways.

I thought I would share a brief exchange about building a coaching business.

This is a great example of if you are willing to give you can create a tribe and following easily!

RACHEL  • Jay, I wrote you a long message, but then realized that perhaps I should just go ahead and lay it all out here for the good of others who are in the same place.

So here’s what I sent you. A private reply to any of this is great, as is a public exchange.

I’ve spent a little time on your website, and I think I’m getting a better idea of how it is you generate the kind of revenue you do. It seems like you’re operating on a large scale–lots of products, programs, webinars, services…how does one person do so much?

I would absolutely LOVE to do public speaking, workshops, seminars…and I know the importance of having a product to sell, but feel like I barely have time to write decent articles. But I’m a bit of a purest and don’t want to outsource things like blog entries and articles.

I network a lot, have a website/use AdWords/FB and twitter, and I have a profile on one referral network….it has become clear to me in a VERY short period of time that this is not my ticket to a thriving practice.

I’m less than 60 days into my own business, and I have one client. Some fellow entrepreneurs are impressed with me, but it’s not enough for me on any level–financially, professionally, emotionally. It seems unfathomable to me that I could go from one client to making six figures in 6 months…I would be thrilled to make $30K inside a year. I do NOT believe in thinking small, but I think I am acting small.

I’m looking forward to what you will share in the forum or with me personally (when your schedule clears a bit, of course). I know that none of us works for free, so while I don’t expect you to give me all your secrets for nothing, I would be so grateful for a hint, a clue, a nudge in the right direction!

Jay Fiset • Part 1

Hey Rachel, I finally have a bit of space to respond, I am happy to help as A) I have been there and B) there are far too many talented and capable coaches out there struggling.

The topic of business building is huge and will take a few posts to do any sort of justice to but here goes with the headlines.

1) Design a business MODEL that works, I truly believe that most coaches are doomed to fail (or at least substantial struggle) by not designing a real business model. Getting some training/certification and printing cards and getting a website is NOT a business model.

No one would dream of building a house without hiring an architect or draftsman to design and draw what will be built, based on how it will be used, who and how many people will live there and what they want their relationship to their environment to be.

Yet every month all over the world new coaches are certified and sent into the world to “print their cards and get their website up and running” it is almost like a ritual to prepare the virgin for sacrifice at the alter. Ok I am getting a bit mellow dramatic but it is not far off the mark. The % of success in this business is not great considering all of the gifted talented and caring people that are attracted to it.

BTW Rachel, the fact that you are new to this can be a significant advantage, you only have one client you have time to create a model that works for you. One of the big issues is that many people become marginally successful with a full one on one practice and then do not have the time to actually build a business they are too busy servicing clients and hitting their head on the ceiling of to make more $$ I must work more hours and there is no time for business building they are just stuck in delivery using a model that traps and limits them.

So on to what to do about this I firmly believe that investing on the development and perfecting (as much as possible LOL) a business model is the most significant job of any entrepreneur so lets start there.

The 6 basic business model elements are as follows:
1) Lead Generation: The MOST COMPLEX and the area that seems most ignored or at least poorly strategized by most coaches.
2) Conversion: You must have a system for filtering the right clients, creating TRUST and INTIMACY, this is one of the major differences is in our business exists “traditional marketing” does not address trust and intimacy to the degree necessary to make conversion easy.
3) Delivery: This is the easiest part of the model, so ouch so that most coaches get caught here…it is a trap, BEWARE!!!
4) Continuity: Your clients need long term support and you need consistent income, so what will your long term offering be that provides both? You work far to hard and long to create a client put them on something consistent. Think memberships, consumables, ongoing education.

Jay Fiset • Part 2

* Ladder of ascension: You MUST have different product offerings at different price points from low $$ digital products to high end premium one on one coaching, and do not space the rungs on the ladder to far apart. over and over I see people trying to jump from a free downloadable ebook to a $2500 coaching program. It can work, but it will be easier if there was a closer rung like a $497 intro.

* Viral coefficient: While this is #6 it is actually a process that must be embedded into every single other element of your model and if you can do it well, you will have a business machine that literally generates leads for you. If you can get to 1.4 VC your business will grow exponentially!! This means that for every client you acquire they deliver to you1.4 more people. It is doable but MUST be designed into your model.

These elements must be considered within the context of these 2 vital filters

* How much do I want to earn/create/contribute

* How much do I want to work

When a business model is structured properly, you can choose how many clients at what price point and press the gas peddle of your business to create clients and CASH!

This is a BRIEF outline but I hope it helps. I wrote this for Rachel, but I am open to any feedback, comments and questions from anyone.

I am off to Vegas for a couple of speaking engagements.

I will respond as soon as I am able.

RACHEL • Wow…this is a lot of priceless information. My wheels are turning at full speed. It makes perfect sense, and especially having products at different price points–no doubt that makes conversion easier. I’m woefully behind on all six of these aspects of the business plan. Suddenly my business plan (albeit more comprehensive than business cards and a website) seems like something scratched on a cocktail napkin! Thank you for sharing your knowledge about how to get started right…and you are absolutely right about my having an opportunity to get things in place before I get bogged down by too many clients at too low a fee. You really went the extra mile in sharing this kind of information, and I am very grateful.

Good luck in Vegas. 🙂

Are You Ready to Create?

I was given as assignment from my coach to really target the people that I want in our new Creation Circles.  I started writing and with the help of the amazing Jessica Belbin this is what I came up with.

If you have EVER had a transformative experience please read this and comment if it resonates with you and your experience. Thanks in advance.
You have had a transformative experience in your life. In other words that: ‘life changing event’, a moment of Self-Realization, an “Ah-Ha moment”, the light bulb came on, Holy shit, breath stealing, Experience of Truth… moment.

Through this moment and afterwards you re-realized your Self Worth and as a result stopped reaching for the bag of Doritos (chips, cookies, ice cream, smokes, and / or glass of… watching late-night T.V. (porn on your lap top, shopping to fill the void, filling your day with ‘to do’s’, consistently satisfying everyone else first, Googling your life away) AND INSTEAD decided you were worth speaking your heart, being who you really are and doing the things in life YOU actually, truly WANTED to do.

After this moment, for at least a while and maybe still:

You dedicated yourself to growing…

You kept your momentum….

You achieved successes beyond what you ever thought possible…

You committed to your ongoing journey…

Yahoo! – (insert back flips here) – That f***ing rocks, and you deserve acknowledgement for that!

But then perhaps, and often enough, comes ‘The Gap’.

What is ‘The Gap’?
You know very well what the gap is. You wish you didn’t, but you do.

It’s the place of no longer playing the small game you used to play. But you sure as hell are not playing the game that is possible, you are not even close to living the life you can be, do and have. You know this because you saw it, you lived it for a while, then it fell away. But you can’t see a way to achieve the life you KNOW that you can have. This uncomfortable, frustrating, depressing, trapped, heavy, painful place has led to feelings of ‘blaming them’ or ‘blaming yourself’ or for a few- ‘no blame, but damn this is slow’…

The true crime with these perceptions is that they mortally wound your capacity to create. Choosing these perspectives breeds resistance and casts you in the darkness and stagnation of victimization. They are choices that lead to you selling yourself on some version of settling into your ‘life of less’. The Truth Hurts…

Are you still hurting?
Frustrated?
Or have you gone numb?

This is where most people stay stuck, between Self-blame victim:
“What’s wrong with me?” or “I suck because everyone else seems to get what they want but I can’t.” and External blame victim: “That organization, course, facilitator, book, info product, etc. took advantage of me and sold me something that doesn’t work in the real world.” or “I’ve tried my best with it. It just doesn’t work.” But lets make no mistake about it, both positions are victim.

A lucky few actually get to a spot of personal accountability, they get to live their dreams, lose weight, start families, run a successful business…

But often, even there, it feels like its going at a snails pace. It takes some time for our reality to catch up with our glimpse of our transformed self.

So we know you. We see you. Our heart goes out to you. That glimpse you had can be real… You just need a different approach! Transformation is not a program, it is not a course, it is not your 6 month series with your personal coach, it’s not your audios on your ipod and it is not all of your shelf help books.

At the Creators Code we know it does not really matter what course(s) you have taken, what journey to Machu Picchu, Nepal, etc. you have done, what guru you have touched, etc. Because..

We know that these are all just different paths to the same destination, which is acknowledging that:

You are a creator. You are a divine reflection of God. A spark of spirit. A part of the Universe. You have the capacity to create and sustain that transformation for yourself, you family, your community and yes, ultimately the world.

You are here for a reason. There is something within you that you are called to create and it’s long past due.

Your tribe is calling, are you coming?

If you are in ‘The Gap’, you are there simply because the elements for guaranteeing success are not in your life and you probably did not know what they were.

Real transformation takes 3 things in addition to your transformative experience(s) – The elements are stunningly simple but incredibly elusive: The three R’s Relate, Reframe, repeat.

Reframe your way of thinking: In case you haven’t noticed this is impossible to do while you are stuck in your own gap. It’s like being trapped in a box and the instructions for how to get out are on the outside, someone has to come along and read them to you and help you get out.

Relate: When in the gap, we attract people that reinforce our current experience and those beliefs that we have had since we were 3 years old (and again in case you haven’t noticed, that is not helping). What is required to sustain change is surrounding yourself with people who get and believe in your vision in yourself and your life. People who have walked the path and done it before you and people who look to you for inspiration and whom you step up to support. That is the way.

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat!. Neuro-Science says it takes hearing something 7 times before the neural network can even hold the idea or the possibility. But that is probably 100,000 times less than what is necessary to translate that idea into a real, tangible, sustained experience or result in your life. How many times have the messages of ‘small you’ been repeated? One of the single largest benefits of your Creation Circle is they will repeat to you over and over ‘You can’, ‘You deserve this’, ‘Its time you came here to create this’, and perhaps most importantly going back to relate ‘We’ll help!

All of these elements are what you will find in your Creation Circle!

There is no end point. There is no ‘straight line’ that anyone stays on. The truth is… the more growth, ‘ah-has’ and ‘Holy shit’ moments on the journey – the better.

Live a life of continuous purpose, clarity and contribution.

But;

Perhaps your pride says it’s impossible. Your experience says it’s risky. Your intellect says it’s pointless. But your heart says give it a try. Participating in a Creation Circle amplifies the Whisper of your Heart.
Step into (again) the magic and flow of creation! You know that within you there is SOMETHING that YOU MUST CREATE. You know with cellular certainty there is something within you that given the right environment, the correct support, the appropriate space YOU WILL MANIFEST YOUR HEARTS DESIRES:

Why Now?

• Really? Have you looked around the world lately?
• Better yet…

• Pause…
• Wait…
• Breathe…

Listen to the Whisper of your Heart …

Asking Directly For What You Want

I never cease to be amazed at the power and simplicity of asking DIRECTLY for what I want.  It is a quantum accelerator, a powerful communication and relationship building tool, and it is a skill that we can all improve upon.

Here is a brief excerpt from my book “Reframe Your Blame, How to be Personally Accountable”

Excerpt starts:

Think of all the things that you have done in your life to gain recognition. Another word for recognition is love (or a reasonable facsimile thereof). You’ve made sacrifices for loved ones, sometimes just going along and pretending you agree, all to make sure you are not judged or rejected. Human beings do wild and wacky things to be recognized, to fit in, to be loved and accepted. The truth is, it rarely works in the way that we would like it to.
Recognition Payoff Remedy: It’s so simple and yet nearly impossible for many people. Simply ask directly for what you want.
“I beg your pardon,” you say. “If it were that easy, I would already be doing that. I remember times in my life when I asked directly and I did not get what I asked for.” I understand that, and of course you’re right—at least from your perspective. That’s why you created the devious routines you have to get the love and recogni- tion that you need.
Let’s elaborate on the deep and complex idea of asking directly for what you want. Sometimes, we’re afraid that if we describe what we truly want and ask for it, we are giving power to those who want to hurt or thwart us. However, consider the logic of not asking, but hoping that someone in your life will catch the hints, intuit your deepest desires (which they should, of course, if they truly care about you), and then behave as you desire. This is nothing more than preplanning and preparing to be victimized by the people from whom you want love and recognition.

Here are some guidelines for successfully asking.

•  Ask directly and honestly for what you want.

• Ask someone who has the capacity to give youwhat you are asking for. Asking a starving man to give you food is unproductive. Asking someone incapable of a committed relationship to provide eternal fidelity and devotion is a recipe for disaster.
• Ask, knowing that it is the other person’s choice to give to you or not. They have every right to say “no.” That doesn’t in any way dismiss or diminish your desire or need. Develop a support network broad enough that you have more than three people to ask.
But suppose you have co-created your relationships in such a way that asking for what you want directly would be nothing more than a setup for the other person to exert power over you by saying “no.” Then start by renegotiating the ground rules of your relationships before asking. Some relationships descend into a spite war, an arena where each resents the other for not supplying what is needed, so they punish each other by withholding what the other wants. If this has happened, negotiate a truce and a new agreement about how you will interact with one another. Your objective: If either of us asks directly for what we want, and the other is physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually able to provide it, they will. If they can’t, they will explain why and offer support for fulfilling this need in another way.

To summarize: If one of your payoffs is recognition (and it is if you are human), ask directly for what you want, ask someone who has the capacity to give it to you, and remember to ask with no strings attached.

They have every right to say “no,” and you have every right to have your needs fulfilled.

Excerpt ends.

So what must you ask for today and whom must you ask? It is often significantly more difficult than it first appears.  If you would like support this is a process that we create agreement to and structure for in primary relationships in our Couples Weekends and Retreats, if you would like more information please check them out.

The Power of a Change of Pace, Inspiration 2020

The power of a change of pace.

Over the past year I have been spending a fair amount of time on the road and I am always amazed at how a simple change of pace can make a monumental difference in the way that I think and how I view both opportunities and difficulties in my life and business.

I have come to appreciate even more than ever before how a different location, away from the anchors and triggers of my day to day life and business can make such a monumental difference.

So here we are at the beginning of the 4th quarter, and if you are like many of my clients, to accomplish your 2011 goals it is going to take an outstanding 4th quarter to meet or exceed those goals.  I have a suggestion, in fact a suggestion with a huge incentive! It is this, join me in Vegas THIS WEEKEND, yes I know that it is Thanksgiving, but lets be clear a trip and a change of pace may be generate a whole lot more gratitude than another family dinner, or copy me and  fly home late Sunday night so you can do Thanksgiving dinner on Monday : ) get the best of both worlds!

This weekend (Oct 7 – 9, 2011) a very cool and amazing event called Inspiration 2020 is being organized by my friend Bill Walsh in Las Vegas.  I am one of the guest speakers and there is an outstanding line up of people including a billionaire (yes with a B!)  I am inviting you to come and experience not just a change of pace, but a RESET to tackle Q4 with the focus and energy it requires. Inspiration 2020 is not just some dry business event it is MUCH more than that, what I love about Bill’s events is that he ALWAYS has fun, pool parties, private club access, great food, it is always done RIGHT!

The event is aimed at life and business success, I was honored to speak at the last one in Orlando, which was an incredible collection of people many of whom I will have life long relationships with both business and personal. If you are looking to do business with the RIGHT group of people (you know what I mean) those that are connected, get who you are and what you do, you can make life long connections as well.

Now here is the best part you can attend for as little as $197 for the entire conference evening parties and networking but if you go VIP (only $497) that includes bringing a friend, plus special seating, access to media suite, special parties EVERYTHING!!

To make it even more attractive, I will personally coach anyone who joins me in Vegas for 1 hour, an additional value of $5oo.

So take the plunge, come have fun, learn and set up your final quarter of 2011 in a way that far exceeds all the goals you set!

Click this link to join me and have a blast!  Yes I AM READY!

See you at “Paris” Las Vegas this weekend!
